Humanities Faculty: History
Just to let you know that there is information / learning tasks for S2, S3, National 5 and Higher on individual Microsoft History Teams.
History qualifications provide a broad range of flexible learning contexts covering Scottish, British and European and world history in medieval, early modern and modern time frames. The Courses develop a breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding of the past, and provide opportunities to consider how political, social, economic and cultural history relate to the world of today.
BROAD GENERAL EDUCATION
The Broad General Education in History is designed to provide a foundation for further study higher up the school, but also to provide an interesting and varied approach that will improve pupils’ literacy, numeracy and understanding of their world.
The S1 course
In S1, pupils study the creation of Scotland, from the departure of the Romans, to the Middle Ages.
There are three key assessments for pupils to complete in S1.
- Early Peoples History homework early peoples
- Comparing the Battles of Nechtansmere and Carham.
- History Project
NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
National 5 History –
The National 5 History Course develops a range of skills including the ability to apply a detailed historical perspective and evaluate sources in a range of contexts. Learners gain a detailed understanding of the factors contributing to, and the impact of, historical events. They also develop the skills of investigating historical events and forming views on the basis of evidence, and of explaining and analysing historical events and drawing reasoned conclusions. National 4 History –
The National 4 History Course develops a range of skills including the ability to apply a straightforward historical perspective and to comment on historical sources in a range of contexts. Learners gain a straightforward knowledge and understanding of the factors contributing to, and the impact of, historical events. They also develop the skills of investigating historical events and forming views, and of explaining historical events and drawing straightforward conclusions. Further information can be found in the NPFC’s Nationals in a Nutshell History National 4
HIGHER
The Higher History Course allows learners to acquire breadth and depth in their knowledge and understanding of the past through the study of Scottish, British, European and world contexts in a variety of time periods. Options cover topics from the medieval, early modern and later modern periods, and include elements of political, social, economic and cultural history.

ADVANCED HIGHER
The Advanced Higher History Course allows learners to acquire depth in their knowledge and understanding of historical themes, and to develop further the skills of analysing complex historical issues, evaluating sources and drawing conclusions. The Course makes a distinctive contribution to the curriculum by engaging in the issues which arise from significant historical events and developments. The depth of study enables learners to engage fully in historical debate and thereby develop a deeper appreciation of the forces which have shaped historical developments.
