BIOLOGY

Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy.

The teaching of Biology within the Department covers the above areas at different levels of complexity. An emphasis is placed on making the subject relevant to the pupils’ own experiences and interests.  A variety of teaching approaches is used to encourage the pupils to take an active part in their learning. Effective study skills are also seen as important to success and staff will help pupils to look at different ways of revising.

NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

National 5 Biology – The National 5 Biology Course covers major areas of biology including cellular, whole organism and ecosystems. The key areas of biodiversity, interdependence, body systems and cells and inheritance are developed through the Course. Further information can be found at the SQA’s National 5 Biology page.

National 4 Biology  – The National 4 Biology Course covers major areas of biology including cellular, whole organism and ecosystems. The key areas of biodiversity, interdependence, body systems and cells and inheritance are developed through the Course. Further information can be found at the SQA’s National 4 Biology page.

HIGHER

The Higher Biology Course offers a broad and up-to-date selection of concepts and ideas relevant to the central position of life science within our society. Learners develop deeper understanding of the underlying themes of biology — evolution and adaptation; structure and function; genotype and niche — and the scale of topics ranges from molecular through to whole organism and beyond.

ADVANCED HIGHER

The Advanced Higher Biology Course is based on integrative ideas and unifying principles of modern biological science. The Course covers key aspects of life science at the molecular scale and extends to aspects of the biology of whole organisms that are among the major driving forces of evolution. Learners develop a sound theoretical understanding and practical experience of experimental investigative work in biological science.
