Chemistry is concerned with materials of every description and is often called the central science as it overlaps with both biology and physics. On the one hand, chemists unravel the chemical reactions which are responsible for life, and on the other, they investigate new materials with exciting and potentially useful properties such as superconductors and electrically conducting plastics.
In our courses we seek to spark an interest in the chemistry all around us e.g. in the everyday products we use from medicines and plastics to galvanised buckets! We consider the properties of substances and how to change one substance into another, whilest raising awareness of citizenship and environmental issues such as the dangers of acid rain and global warming.
Through their studies in Chemistry pupils gain not only scientific knowledge and understanding but also practical, interpersonal and problem solving skills, prized not only in science and engineering but also many other walks of life. Through stimulating practical work and varied learning approaches our aim is to support pupils to enjoy their studies in Chemistry and to fulfil their own personal potential.
Since Chemistry depends on the gradual building of chemical concepts and knowledge, pupils at all stages are encouraged to show commitment to their studies right from the beginning of their courses. They are supported in this through the setting of regular homework exercises, and encouraged to consolidate their knowledge and skills through regular, effective home study. Pupils should make effective use of their notes in completing homework and any pupils experiencing problems should seek help from their teacher in advance of the due date.
NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
National 5 Chemistry – The National 5 Chemistry Course enables learners to develop and apply knowledge and understanding of chemistry. Learners also develop an understanding of chemistry’s role in scientific issues and relevant applications of chemistry, including the impact these could make in society and the environment. Further information can be found at the SQA’s National 5 Chemistry page.
National 4 Chemistry – The National 4 Chemistry Course enables learners to develop and apply knowledge and understanding of chemistry. Learners also develop an understanding of chemistry’s role in scientific issues and relevant applications of chemistry in society and the environment. Further information can be found at the SQA’s National 4 Chemistry page.
HIGHER
The Higher Chemistry Course develops learners’ curiosity, interest and enthusiasm for chemistry in a range of contexts. The skills of scientific inquiry and investigation are developed throughout the Course, and the relevance of chemistry is highlighted by the study of the applications of chemistry in everyday contexts.
ADVANCED HIGHER
The Advanced Higher qualification in Chemistry develops sophisticated skills of independent study and thought. Learners are given the opportunity of in-depth study of electronic structure, chemical bonding, thermochemistry and kinetics. Learners will be able to demonstrate proficiency in scientific writing, revealing the significance of findings by analysing and interpreting results in a critical and scientific manner.
