Huntly is a great place to live, work and visit and surrounded by great countryside. However, as identified in the 2018/19 “Huntly – Room to Thrive” community consultation, getting around our small, compact town and accessing the wider rural area on foot and by bike can feel surprisingly unsafe and daunting. As a result, we can all miss out on many of the health, learning, environmental and financial benefits taken for granted in many places across the world. The Dutch, for example, choose to design towns that are safe, easy and convenient to walk and cycle around. Their public space is often very attractive as more of it is dedicated to greenery. Clearly, vehicles are still catered for but – put simply – people are prioritised.

“Mini Holland Huntly” wants to hear if and how you think we could make this happen in Huntly. The initial focus is on the area around the schools and Huntly town centre, but please feel free to comment on any travel-related issues/opportunities you identify in Huntly and the wider area. This can include your thoughts on how to improve things for vehicles. All the information we receive will feed into plans which we will develop with our partners over spring 2022.

How we all choose to get around impacts on all of us, we want and need everyone in Huntly and District to get involved. So, please, after you’ve left your own comments, ask your friends and neighbours to have their say too. “The world is ruled by those who turn up” goes the saying, so your/their involvement is really important!

Mini Holland Huntly is a project of the Huntly Travel Hub, part of Huntly Development Trust. The project is supported by Aberdeenshire Council and the Sustrans Scotland Places for Everyone fund. More information can be found on the Huntly Travel Hub page here.
